In the control group of intact mother-kid pairs, the young displayed continuous feeding behavior in all cases. In contrast, however, the mothers in the early separation group ignored their young and continued eating. Moreover, this pattern of indifferent behavior by the mothers did not resolve with increasing maternal-young contact. Even after two months, the separated mothers nursed other kids as often as their own, while mothers from the intact group refused to nurse foreign kids and often butted them away.

Conclusions We can thus draw the following conclusions: I) There are a number of factors present in human milk that could have an immunologic role. 2) These host resistance factors are capable of surviving in the newborn's intestinal tract. 3) There is sound theoretical reasoning as well as good evidence that many of these factors function in the newborn. 4) There is epidemiologic evidence to support the contention that these host resistance factors provide an intrinsic immunologic advantage to the breast-fed baby.
