The mortise is inset at each end, so that it is entirely concealed from view in the finished joint. Although it is perfectly feasible to remove all the waste from the mortise with the chisel and mallet, this is an unnecessarily long drawn-out task. To speed up the process, much of the waste may be drilled out by boring a series of holes along the length of the mortise. It is important that the drill bit should be slightly smaller in diameter than the width of the mortise, so that each drilled hole fits comfortably within the scribed lines.

Fit a 16mm (⅝in) centre bit into the handbrace and drill out all the holes. Do not bore right through the wood, but make a series of stopped holes. To do this, turn the drill until the pointed tip just begins to break the under surface – you will feel a tiny bulge developing. Do not drill any further, but clean out all the loose waste inside the hole with a 6mm (¼in) chisel to leave a neat stopped hole. Check the depth of the hole with the tape measure. Cut four pieces of 16mm- (⅝in-) diameter dowelling to length, allowing for the extra required at each end to fit into the receiver holes.
