The workflow process is based on a formalized workflow model that is used to capture data and control flow between workflow tasks. Several formalisms can be exploited to build a workflow model. The use of high-level Petri nets seems very promising for modeling and analyzing clinical processes. Petri nets have proven to be useful in the context of logistics and production control. However, the application of these Petri nets is not restricted to logistics and manufacturing, they can also be used to support business process reeingineering efforts.
Artificial Intelligence for Building Learning Health Care Organizations 9 27 Conclusions Clinical knowledge explicitly represented, as well as the organizational knowledge, almost always tacit, represent the core asset for the third millennium HCO. If people are an asset then effective people management is an asset too. HCO are now facing new fundamental problems. How information and communication technologies can be effectively used to exploit the institutional intellectual capital? Intellectual capital is the term given to the combined intangible assets which enable the HCO to function .
Later work has proposed the use of specific temporalquery languages for clinical data that are structured by a temporal-network model. Even though such languages were oriented to individual patient records and were not based on a generic data model, they were early attempts to address the need for an extension of query languages so as to enable the system to retrieve complex temporal properties of stored data. Most query languages and data models used for clinical data management were application-dependent; thus, developers had to provide ad-hoc facilities for querying and manipulating specific temporal aspects of data.
